Discover the story of Ruth Murdoch Elementary School—from its humble beginnings to a thriving K–8 community grounded in Christ-centered values.
Rooted in Faith. Committed to Excellence.
Ruth Murdoch Elementary School is named in honor of Dr. Ruth Rittenhouse Murdoch—a pioneering educator and child psychologist whose life’s work centered on faith, character, and learning. Her vision was clear: to nurture the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—through Christ-centered education.
Today, that vision lives on in every classroom, chapel, and moment of discovery at RMES.
Ruth Murdoch Elementary School has served generations of students with excellence in Christ-centered education since 1970. Owned and operated by Andrews University and supported by Pioneer Memorial Church, RMES began as part of a broader vision to prepare young people for a life of purpose, service, and academic growth within the framework of Seventh-day Adventist values.
What began in the 1940s as part of a shared academy and elementary building has grown into a vibrant, diverse K–8 learning community, deeply connected to the mission of Adventist education.

At Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, we believe that education should nurture the whole child—mind, body, and spirit. Our classrooms are places of discovery, where faith is central, learning is active, and each student is known and valued. With dedicated teachers, small class sizes, and a vibrant school culture, RMES provides a strong academic foundation rooted in Christian values.
As a diverse K–8 community, we blend rigorous instruction with character-building experiences that include service projects, music and language education, STEAMS mini-courses, and faith-based leadership development. Every student is encouraged to grow not only in knowledge, but in compassion, confidence, and purpose.
Why do we do what we do? Because we believe that each child is uniquely gifted by God—and that their education should prepare them not just for high school, but for a life of meaning, service, and joy.
Mission Statement
This mission shapes every part of the RMES experience. From the classroom to the playground, from chapel services to service projects, we are intentional about cultivating a space where children are encouraged to think deeply, lead with integrity, and reflect Christ’s love in all they do. Rooted in Adventist values, our mission calls us to educate not just for today—but for eternity.
Our Slogan
More than words, this is the heartbeat of everything we do. We invite each student to come as they are, grow into who God designed them to be, and share their light with the world.
Where Faith, Excellence, and Purpose Come Together
These early years are more than a stage—they're the foundation. At Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, your child isn’t just memorizing facts—they’re learning how to live with integrity, lead with compassion, and walk with Christ. In a world that moves fast, RMES offers a space where spiritual growth, character development, and academic excellence go hand-in-hand—supported by teachers who care and a community that prays.
This is where values are lived, not just taught. And where your child’s heart grows as much as their mind.

This past year, in particular, we have been able to see in an even more special way the importance of Christian education in our family. Our children have learned more and more about the Scriptures, being able to memorize and recite long sections, and actively participating in the activities offered by the school and church for their
development. One of the results of this positive influence was our oldest son (Samuel)'s decision to be baptized and his constant desire to one day serve as a missionary throughout the world.

I am very impressed with Ruth Murdoch. My 5 year old is just finishing kindergarten. His teacher is outstanding and I'm amazed at how much he has learned this year and how motivated he is to learn more. My child was reluctant to go to school at first (wanted to be home with me), but has adjusted very well. I love the emphasis on educating the whole child. He comes home and repeats to me spiritual and moral lessons he's learned.

Excellent school! My husband studied in this institution, Ruth Murdoch Elementary School and now our daughter Amy is studying the 6th grade under Professor Deborah Park and I see that the teaching is of high level and an incredible learning technique that makes the class interesting and quickly assimilated by the children. I am very grateful for the learning my daughter has had up to now and for the Christian principles transmitted to her.

From hands-on STEM to expressive arts and global mission experiences, our programs ignite curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
From science labs and engineering challenges to digital design and service projects, RMES students are immersed in STEAMS (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, and Service) learning. These hands-on mini-courses promote creativity, critical thinking, and a passion for discovery across disciplines.
Now in its 11th year, TENT is a signature junior high initiative that combines spiritual growth with global mission awareness. Students explore what it means to serve in diverse contexts and deepen their sense of calling through prayer, projects, and real-world ministry connections.
Beginning in the early grades, students are introduced to Spanish through engaging, age-appropriate lessons that foster cultural awareness and communication skills. Our language program broadens students’ worldview and lays the foundation for bilingual fluency and global citizenship.
Music is woven into the life of RMES. Students participate in regular music classes and have opportunities to join choir, learn instruments, and perform throughout the year. These creative experiences build confidence, discipline, and a joyful sense of expression—while also giving students a way to lead in worship and community events.
Grades 6–8 at RMES offer a dynamic environment where students are challenged academically and supported emotionally. Elective courses, leadership roles, service opportunities, and special experiences like Outdoor School help students grow in independence and prepare for the next step in their education with confidence.
RMES students learn in spacious, well-equipped classrooms and enjoy access to a full-size gymnasium, a dedicated music room, outdoor play spaces, and a school garden. Our campus is designed to support movement, collaboration, creativity, and safety—all essential for growing bodies and minds.
Enhancing Education Through Expert Collaboration
As the official laboratory school for Andrews University, RMES benefits from a rich, collaborative partnership that brings advanced expertise and professional support directly to our students. Through this relationship, experienced faculty from the University’s School of Education and the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology work closely with our teachers to enrich instruction and student care.
Graduate students—carefully selected and supervised by licensed professionals—join our classrooms to support teaching and provide specialized services such as academic assessments, individual and group counseling, and personalized learning interventions. These collaborative efforts are designed to uplift and strengthen the RMES experience, offering students both high-quality instruction and holistic support within a nurturing environment.

The early years of education shape more than just school readiness—they shape identity, confidence, and a lifelong approach to learning. At Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, we recognize that what happens in these formative years lays the groundwork for how a child thinks, relates, and thrives. Here, education is more than academics. It’s the cultivation of curiosity, the strengthening of resilience, and the daily experience of being seen and supported. In classrooms filled with purpose and encouragement, students begin to understand not just what they can achieve—but who they are in Christ.
