A Physical Education Program with Purpose

At Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, physical education is more than just gym time - it’s a carefully designed program that supports the physical, mental, and spiritual development of every student.

Grounded in the belief that our bodies are wonderfully made by God, our PE program helps students build fitness, character, and confidence through age-appropriate activities that emphasize teamwork, skill-building, and sportsmanship.

Whether it’s understanding the game schedule or reviewing our sportsmanship expectations, these resources are here to help your family support a healthy and positive PE experience.

What Students Experience in Physical Education

Skill-Based, Age-Appropriate Instruction. Each grade level participates in physical education designed to meet students where they are—focusing on motor skills, physical coordination, game strategy, and personal fitness goals.
Character-Focused Coaching. Whether winning or losing, coming in first or last, students are reminded that how they play matters. Coach Lonto models and teaches the importance of reflecting Christ’s character in all areas of life.
Lifelong Fitness Values. Students learn the importance of health through exercise, the joy of movement, and the benefits of developing lifelong habits of physical wellness - all while honoring God with their bodies.
Standards-Aligned Curriculum. Our program is developed in partnership with the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, the State of Michigan, FitnessGram, and the President’s Youth Fitness Program to ensure excellence in both instruction and outcomes.
Intramural Sports for Grades 5–8. Students in grades 5 through 8 are invited to participate in our intramural sports program. These team-based games offer opportunities for fun, friendly competition, skill development, and leadership in a structured, supportive environment.

Where Every Lesson Builds Confidence
and Character

The early years of education shape more than just school readiness—they shape identity, confidence, and a lifelong approach to learning. At Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, we recognize that what happens in these formative years lays the groundwork for how a child thinks, relates, and thrives. Here, education is more than academics. It’s the cultivation of curiosity, the strengthening of resilience, and the daily experience of being seen and supported. In classrooms filled with purpose and encouragement, students begin to understand not just what they can achieve—but who they are in Christ.
