Music at RMES

Inspiring hearts and minds through melody, movement, and ministry.

Developing Talents. Honoring God.

A Christ-Centered Music Experience for Every Student

At Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, music is more than a subject - it’s a creative and spiritual expression woven into daily student life. Students are encouraged to explore their musical gifts and use them in ways that honor God.

From Kindergarten through 8th grade, students at RMES engage with music as both a creative outlet and a form of worship. Younger students build foundational skills in rhythm, melody, and movement during general music classes, while older students can choose from a range of ensembles - including Beginning Band, Concert Band, String Orchestra, Bell & Chimes Choirs, Classroom Choirs, and Performance Choir. Whether learning to read music, performing in chapel, or preparing for a festival, students are encouraged to grow in skill, discipline, and spiritual purpose.

Each opportunity fosters not only musical growth, but also confidence, collaboration, and joy in using their talents to serve others.

Where Faith, Excellence, and Purpose Come Together

What Students Experience in Music

General Music Education. All students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 participate in weekly general music classes where they learn the fundamentals of rhythm, melody, movement, and music appreciation. These early experiences build confidence, foster creativity, and lay the foundation for lifelong musical engagement.
Vocal Ensembles. Students can participate in a variety of choir programs. These groups rehearse regularly and perform at school assemblies, church events, and special programs throughout the year - developing not only vocal skill, but confidence and a heart for service.
Christ-Centered Expression. At every level, the music program emphasizes spiritual purpose. Students learn that music is not only a performance art but also a form of worship. Through every note sung or played, they are encouraged to glorify God and uplift others with their talents.
Instrumental Ensemble Opportunities. Starting in Grade 5, students may join Beginning Band or String Orchestra. String Orchestra is open to all students who qualify and demonstrate readiness for ensemble participation. As students enter Grades 7 and 8, they have access to additional opportunities including Concert Band, Handbells, and Chimes. These ensembles provide hands-on instruction across a range of instruments, helping students build technique, discipline, and the joy of collaborative performance.
Festival Participation. Select students may be invited to represent RMES in regional music festivals and events, such as Band and Strings Festivals. These enriching experiences challenge students to perform at a high level, collaborate with peers from other schools, and celebrate their growth as young musicians.
A Seamless Path for Musical Growth. One of the unique strengths of the RMES music program is its connection to Andrews Academy. Many of our music teachers serve students at both schools, creating a consistent, supportive learning experience from elementary through high school. This continuity allows students to deepen their skills, build lasting mentorships, and grow musically within a familiar, Christ-centered environment.

Where Every Lesson Builds Confidence
and Character

The early years of education shape more than just school readiness—they shape identity, confidence, and a lifelong approach to learning. At Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, we recognize that what happens in these formative years lays the groundwork for how a child thinks, relates, and thrives. Here, education is more than academics. It’s the cultivation of curiosity, the strengthening of resilience, and the daily experience of being seen and supported. In classrooms filled with purpose and encouragement, students begin to understand not just what they can achieve—but who they are in Christ.
